Creation is an exploration; through making art I find that I am able to explore myself through an externalization of the internal, as well the world around me by reproducing what I observe through various lenses. This connects to the process of creating itself, which I see as as much an art as the end product. Sketching is vital to my work, and is how I think through projects. The process becomes inherently connected to the piece, furthering exploration. I value being able to learn as I make. There’s a ritual to creation that I become entrenched in, and I find myself drawn to process heavy art forms that I find a deeply rewarding intensity in. I’m inspired by the natural world around me, using imagery of flora and fauna throughout my work. Within this inspiration, I recognize that nature is often viewed in a way that enforces a colonial binary. I aim to be aware of and avoid these narratives in my work, which is part of why I believe it’s so important to expand on this imagery and connect it to lived experiences and the broader world. These lived experiences also have a strong influence on my work. In my practice I strive to challenge binaries, both societal and artistic.
